Brown Deserves More Love in Color Magick

I am having a serious brown moment. 🤎

It started innocently enough. I wanted brown trim to go with our green kitchen.

Then we started planning burgundy walls for our bedroom and I immediately thought: deep espresso trim. Then came the dark brown sweater. The 90's brown lipstick. And naturally, the cocoa nail polish to go with the sweater and lipstick. By the time I made an entire cocoa-brown moodboard I had to ask myself: Why the heck am I so drawn to brown lately?

Which, naturally, got me thinking about color magick. And I realized something.

Brown really doesn't get enough love in color magick!

Brown is so much more than just “earthy.”

Brown tends to get reduced to two things: earth and grounding. And yes—absolutely. But there's so much more hiding underneath that. Brown can be associated with grounding, stability, security, reliability, durability, practicality, home, hearth, roots, comfort, endurance, and connection to the physical world.

Think about where we find it. Soil holding roots firmly in place, wood building the walls of a home, tree bark protecting what's growing underneath. Coffee warming your hands. Old books. Worn leather. The kitchen table everyone gathers around. Brown isn't necessarily the color that demands your attention. It's not flashy energy. It's steady energy. And maybe that's exactly why I've been reaching for it.

Working with brown doesn't require anything special.

You also don't need to run out and buy a brown spell candle because you suddenly want to work with this energy. We are resourceful witches so first we look around!

Wear the brown sweater.

Paint your nails.

Drink your morning coffee with intention.

Tie a spell with brown string.

Write in brown ink.

Bring natural wood into your sacred space.

Choose a stone from outside.

Use brown in your home when you want a space to feel grounded, secure, warm, or rooted.

Color magick can be woven into things you're already wearing, using, decorating with, and reaching for. And I think that's part of what makes it so fun.

Pay attention to the colors you keep choosing.

I'm not saying every time you buy a brown sweater the universe is desperately trying to send you a message. Sometimes you just really like the sweater. But I do think the colors we're repeatedly drawn to can be interesting to explore.

What does that color represent to you?

How does it make you feel?

What traditional correspondences resonate—and which don't?

What kind of energy could you intentionally bring to something you're already doing with it?

Apparently, right now, I'm craving things that feel grounded, warm, secure, rooted, and mine. So yeah. I'm a brown girlie and proud of it!
