How Do I Learn Tarot Without Memorizing 78 Cards?

Updated: Sep 18
You pick up a tarot deck, realize there are 78 freaking cards, and immediately wonder if you’re supposed to memorize an entire tiny encyclopedia before you’re allowed to do a reading.
You’re not.
Here are a few ways to start reading tarot without turning it into a flashcard assignment:
Look at the card first. Before reaching for the guidebook, notice what you see. What’s happening in the image? What catches your attention? How does the card make you feel?

Learn patterns instead of 78 separate definitions. Start noticing the structure of the deck—the suits, numbers, court cards, and Major Arcana. Understanding those patterns gives you clues even when you don’t remember a card’s traditional meaning.
Use the guidebook. Seriously. Looking something up isn’t cheating. Your guidebook, notes, or favorite tarot reference can stay beside you for as long as you need them.

Pay attention to the cards together. A tarot reading isn’t a stack of flashcards. The cards talk to each other.
Look for repeating symbols, numbers, suits, themes, or contrasts. How does one card change the way you see another?
And most importantly? Practice. Pull cards, get curious, look things up, write down what you notice. Let your understanding grow over time.
You don’t need to memorize 78 definitions before you can read tarot. You learn tarot by reading tarot.
