You Don’t Need Expensive Witchcraft Supplies to Practice Magick

There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying beautiful witchcraft supplies. Buy the gorgeous tarot deck. Fall in love with the handmade candle. Save up for the giant crystal that makes your little goblin heart happy. But you do not need any of it to practice witchcraft.

Your ancestors didn’t need a $60 witch kit to practice magick. And you don’t need a $300 altar either.

Witchcraft existed before witchcraft shopping did.

People have always made use of what was available to them. Plants growing nearby. Food from the kitchen. Water, fire, string, stones, handmade objects. Things passed down, found, grown, traded, repurposed, or already sitting around the house.

Resourcefulness isn’t a lesser version of witchcraft.

It’s one of the oldest parts of it. Your coffee mug can hold an offering. A bowl from your kitchen can become an offering bowl. The rosemary in your spice cabinet can be used in spellwork. A birthday candle can still be a candle. A cool rock you found outside can be meaningful without coming with a label telling you what it's supposed to do.

And your altar? It can be a shelf. A windowsill. A little box you put away when you’re finished. A few meaningful objects on your dresser. It can even be completely invisible if that's what works for your life.

Start with meaning, not shopping.

When you want to practice, try asking:

What do I already have that could support this intention? Sometimes you’ll decide you genuinely want a particular tool—and that's great. But buying something should be an option, not the admission price. The magick was never hiding inside the expensive candle, perfectly curated altar, or preassembled witch kit. The magick has always been in you.

Want to build a practice with what you already have?

The Resourceful Witch’s Grimoire is a 222-page witchcraft workbook built around exactly that idea: start where you are, use what you have, and make your practice yours.
